  Sharp-eyed readers will have noticed that the title of the new Target Margin Theater play, “Marjana and the Forty Thieves,” is familiar, but also a bit off. Wait, someone other than Ali Baba had to battle 40 thieves? Or is this an alternate take of that famous tale, the one featuring the famous phrase “open, Sesame”?

  Actually, that story prominently figures in this show — it’s just that the focus has been switched from Ali Baba to Marjana, a slave girl in his household who got him out of a pretty bad jam (outswindling swindlers may not be a great idea).

  But let’s back up a bit, because despite the title, Marjana does not actually get all that much spotlight here. David Herskovits’s production spends considerably more time on “One Thousand and One Nights,” the omnibus of stories that includes “Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves.” “Marjana” continues the exploration of that world started in last year’s “Pay No Attention to the Girl,” but it is very much its own show. (I used the show’s spellings for the characters — Marjana herself, for instance, is called Morgiana in English versions of the tale.)

  Looking at how tales are created and passed along is a great subject for our times. After all, we live in a culture obsessed with storytelling — even elections are decided in no small part by the narratives candidates spin about themselves and the country, rather than by hard facts and policy planning — and issues of authorship. Both of these are an integral part of “One Thousand and One Nights” (also known as “Arabian Nights”), a living organism that developed through accretion as stories were added through the centuries. On a smaller scale, “Marjana” was devised by its company over three years.

  With the inside of the Doxsee Theater made up to resemble a nomadic tent, audience members sit on cushions, couches, chairs and bean bags, while the five actors roam about the space. They spend the first part of the show retelling, at considerable, convoluted length, the premise tying together the old fables: A woman named Scheherazade saved her life from the tyrannical King Shahriyar’s cruel whims by keeping him hooked on the tales she made up night after night after night.

  The narrative, mostly in the third person common to storytelling, is dotted with much contemporary vernacular. Shahriyar and his brother, Shahzaman, “were pretty solid leaders,” we’re told; at one point Shahzaman “discovered my wife cheating on me with this black dude on the new 300-thread-count sheets I bought her.” And so on. This does not make the rambling proceedings any more compelling, though the sound operator Eamon Goodman mixes in fairly entertaining modern music cues.

  Eventually, the audience is divided into five small sections. Tea is offered; we snack on dates, almonds, dried apricots and sesame candy. Each group is assigned an actor (Isuri Wijesundara in my case), who informs us of the way these ancient tales from the Arab world made it to the West — basically thanks to the efforts, in the early 1700s, of one Antoine Galland, a French Orientalist and translator. Galland himself contributed to the corpus by adding some tales, including the famous ones about Ali Baba and Aladdin, he had heard (or so he said) from a Syrian named Hanna Diyab.

  And then it’s time to switch gears again, as the cast takes over a traditional stage to act out the titular story in an old-fashioned, broadly comic style that nods toward pantomime and vaudeville but lands like a sluggish children’s show. Scheherazade may not have approved.
